In 1954 Winkhaus produced its first tilt-and-turn window hardware. In 1978 a fundamentally new type of hardware system — Pilot — was developed, the result of more than 20 years of work on improving hardware. Later, in 1996, window manufacturers were offered an improved version of this hardware for fully automated installation — the autoPilot system. And in 2006 it was succeeded by a new hardware standard — activPilot Concept, which went on to found the whole activPilot family of hardware systems.

For a window buyer, personal safety and protection of property matter a great deal, since unauthorized entry most often happens through window or door openings. Window security is "made up" of a number of components, and hardware plays the key role among them. In response to today's challenges, Winkhaus engineers developed a hardware system based on a unique locking element — the octagonal mushroom cam, common to almost all versions of the hardware. Mounted on the sash, this cam engages with a matching security striker on the frame as the window closes, creating a burglar-resistance point. The more such points, the higher the window's resistance class.

To decide whether the buyer needs burglar-resistant hardware with security strikers instead of standard ones, a special cover plate on the GP/GR gearbox and a lockable handle with a key, ask the customer where the building is located and how accessible and visible the window is from the street.

Window security matters above all to residents of apartment buildings living on the ground and top floors; private houses and cottages; shops; offices, banks and financial institutions; schools, kindergartens and so on.

2007. Tilmann Winkhaus, a fifth-generation member of the Winkhaus family and son of Hans Winkhaus, heads the company together with Sofie Winkhaus.


2006. At the international trade fair in Nuremberg, Winkhaus presents activPilot, a new hardware standard combining design, quality, security and ease of installation thanks to fewer hardware components. It will fully replace autoPilot in the future.

2004. Expansion of the plant in Rydzyna, Poland: Winkhaus invests EUR 1 million and doubles the plant's production area to 4,000 sq m.

2003. Sofie Winkhaus, a fifth-generation member of the Winkhaus family and daughter of Wolfgang Winkhaus, heads the company.

1996. Winkhaus offers window manufacturers fully automated installation of window hardware with the autoPilot tilt-and-turn hardware system.

1995. Construction of a plant in Meiningen, Germany: Winkhaus builds a new plant specializing in multi-point door locks.

1992. Winkhaus opens a new company in Poland with production facilities for assembling window hardware. In 1997, with the company's steady growth, a new administrative building and production complex were built in Rydzyna.

1969. Winkhaus's first international office opens in Salzburg, Austria.
