Hydro to Shut Down Two U.S. Extrusion Plants in 2027
Hydro announced it will close two aluminum extrusion facilities in the United States, citing low capacity utilization and the capital investment needed to bring the sites up to operational standards. The closures affect roughly 350 employees and will reshape supply for window, door, and glazing customers who source aluminum profiles from the company's North American network.
The two plants slated for closure are located in City of Industry, California, and Delhi, Louisiana. Both operate under Hydro's Extrusion North America division, which supplies aluminum profiles used in fenestration products, curtain wall systems, and other building components.
The City of Industry facility will end operations on January 1, 2027, though limited activity will continue through the first quarter of that year. The Delhi plant will conclude operations on April 1, 2027, followed by a wind-down period extending through the third quarter of 2027.
Hydro said both sites face low capacity utilization, meaning the plants have been running well below their production potential. The company also pointed to the significant capital investment that would be required to bring the facilities up to current operational standards. Rather than make that investment, Hydro opted to close the sites and consolidate output elsewhere.
The company framed the decision as part of a broader effort to strengthen its long-term position in the U.S. market. Hydro said the move is meant to optimize its operational footprint and concentrate investment in facilities where it can generate the greatest return.
Hydro has started discussions with affected employees about transition packages and support services. The company is encouraging workers at both sites to apply for open positions at its other North American locations.
For customers who rely on the two plants, Hydro said it has already begun retooling and shifting production to other facilities within its North American network. That transition work is expected to be complete by the end of the first quarter of 2027, which the company says will help maintain continuity of supply during the changeover.
The closures come as aluminum extrusion demand tied to the window, door, and glazing sector has fluctuated alongside broader construction activity in recent years. Fabricators and OEMs that source profiles from Hydro's City of Industry or Delhi plants will need to track the transition timeline closely, particularly given the parallel wind-down and retooling schedules through 2027. Companies with contracts tied to either facility should expect communication from Hydro about production reassignment as the process moves forward.
